As of January 1st, 2023, upholstered furniture that was manufactured before 2019 can no longer be disposed of via landfill. Instead, it must be safely incinerated.
This is because old, upholstered furniture often contains Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which were used as chemical flame retardants. POPs have a long lifespan and remain on the furniture. When this furniture is disposed of via landfill, it risks polluting the environment and wildlife.

The easiest way to dispose of waste upholstered furniture is to bring it directly to one of our certified recycling facilities. At many of our sites, we have now provided a separate skip for these items. This prevents cross contamination and allows us to easily and safely dispose of your furniture.
Hire a Specialised Skip/RoRo
For disposing of a large amount of waste furniture, you can hire a designated skip from us – intended solely for upholstered furniture disposal.
