Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating (WUDS)

On the 1st of January 2023 new legislation came into effect regarding the process in storing and disposal of Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating.

The changes followed guidance from the Environment Agency in disposing of upholstered seating that contain POPs. The guidance states that all waste upholstered domestic seating will no longer be accepted at landfill(s) and must be destroyed via incineration.

How to identify Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating?

Upholstered seating at present is classed as any item of seating whether from businesses or households that are no longer in use and ready for disposal.

Items classed as waste upholstered domestic seating:

  • Sofas
  • Sofa Beds
  • Armchairs
  • Kitchen & Dining Room Chairs
  • Stools & Foot Stools
  • Office Chairs
  • Beanbags, Floor & Sofa Cushions
  • Futons

This is also to include any made part of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam.

W&S can accept Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating that may contain POPs at our Material Recycling Facility, Ling Road, Poole, BH12 4NZ. (CHARGES APPLICABLE). We also have available Skips & Roro’s for these specific waste types. Please email skips@wsrecycling.co.uk with any enquiries.
