Plastic Recycling Made Simple

02 September 2019

Help save the planet by ensuring you recycle as much of your plastic waste as possible. At W&S, we offer specialist plastic recycling at many of our sites in Dorset and Oxfordshire and thanks to our years of experience, we make the whole process quick and easy. We welcome private customers and loose, soft plastic from trade customers with a valid waste carriers license and a vehicle that’s 3.5 tonnes or less.

What happens to my plastic recycling?

Once we have received your plastic recycling, it begins its transformation journey on our conveyor belts where our experts check for residual food waste or materials (such as shampoo and conditioner) that may damage our machines – this is why it’s important to clean your plastic recycling before sending it to a processing plant. It is then sorted into grades, baled up to make it easy to transport, and then transferred to the plastic recycling specialists who give the plastic a new lease of life. Plastic is often formed into pellets that are used to make new plastic products, such as water bottles and furniture, or turned into thread and used to create new clothes.

Why is plastic recycling important?

Plastics make up more than 12% of all solid waste, with 30 million tonnes being contributed each year. This vast amount ends its life sitting in landfill for between 500 – 1000 years, as that’s how long plastic takes to decompose, and clogging valuable landfill space that’s running out fast. With such a large amount of plastic thrown away each and every day, it often ends up contaminating our oceans and severely damaging the ecosystem. Indeed, over a million sea birds and more than 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic pollution each year! So if we want to preserve the Earth for future generations, we must work hard now to cut our use of plastic and ensure we recycle as much as possible.

The benefits of plastic recycling

There are many benefits to recycling our plastic waste including:

  • Less space taken up in landfill – for every tonne of plastic recycled, 7 yards of landfill is saved
  • A huge 80% reduction in the amount of energy used to create new plastic products
  • Preserves the use of valuable fossil fuels
  • Reduces energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. It’s estimated that every tonne of plastic recycling can run the electricity of an average household for 7 months
  • Saves the lives of wildlife and ensures our ecosystem is sustainable
