Do you need an incentive to recycle?

11 June 2018

A professor of climatology at University College London, Mark Maslin, spoke at the Cheltenham Science Festival this week, suggesting that the Government should be offering incentives to the public to recycle more. The professor stated that if there was a system awarding individuals points for recycling products, which then could be exchanged for rewards, this would help reduce the amount of landfill currently in the UK.

Mark Maslin explains that the UK should adopt China’s social credit system, where people have a social score that can move up or down depending on their behaviour in society. He explains, “why shouldn’t you get credit points for recycling, looking after your children properly, making sure they do their homework?” Do you think you need an incentive to help protect the environment? Helpful recycling tips

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Most of us have heard this common saying before, but few actively follow the message of reducing, reusing and recycling the waste products we produce. The first step to reducing your carbon footprint is trying to produce less waste, this can be done by making small changes. For example, switching to a reusable water container instead of buying multiple plastic water bottles.

Understand what can be recycled

Research the guidelines for your local recycling centre; as each area has different recycling requirements you don’t want to be making mistakes that could jeopardise your products. In some cities and towns, they accept plastic materials as they can recycle it, while others don’t so it’s important to always double check. If you still feel uncertain about what you can and can’t recycle, you can always call our team on 01202 675564 for more details.

Buy recyclable products

Choosing to buy products that have recyclable materials will contribute to reducing the yearly landfill contribution, which is approximately 18 million tonnes! It’s understandable that you probably won’t remember to do this for every product you buy each month, but making a conscious effort to do this when you can will help improve your local natural environment.
