Pile of Construction Wood

The Benefits of Recycling Wood

17 October 2024

Most construction projects nowadays will produce some level of wood waste, with approximately 4.5 million tonnes of waste wood generated in the UK in 2023. No matter how big or small the project, it is important to properly dispose of, or recycle wood. Many construction companies, however, incorrectly dispose of wood once it has served its original purpose, which can be a harmful action for both the business and the environment.

If your workplace produces wood waste and you’re wondering what you should do with it, here are the benefits of recycling wood, by our recycling experts:

Reduced risks of fire

Accrued heaps of wood waste close to any property or facility can quite easily become a fire hazard. Idle piles of wood pose flammable danger and can affect other workplaces or residential areas surrounding any given site in the unfortunate event of a fire.

To prevent such circumstances, gather your wood waste and contact a professional recycling facility instead. There are several recycling companies that can take care of this for you, and you should take advantage of their services.

Preserve natural resources

After replanting, trees can take decades before they reach maturity again, so the less we take from the forest, the better. When you choose to recycle wood waste, you extend the product's life and reduce the need to cut down more trees.

The benefits of this are triple fold:

  • It conserves forests and reduces the demand for fresh timber
  • It reduces tree felling which positively affects the environment
  • Preserving trees, nature's ability to absorb carbon dioxide is retained
  • In 2023, waste wood biomass saved almost 701,000 tonnes of carbon emissions compared to likely displaced energy generation

Reduced spend on material processing

It is far cheaper for manufacturers to use recycled materials when producing products. Raw materials require higher levels of energy to extract and process, whereas with recycled materials, much of this has already been completed. For example, making paper from pulped recycled paper uses 40% less energy than making it from raw wood fibres, creating large savings in energy spend.

Of course, this will come round to benefit you too because the lower production costs can be reflected in the price of the materials once manufactured, saving you money.
